WHAT IS SOONERSTART?

SoonerStart is a statewide program in Oklahoma that provides a range of services for infants and toddlers from birth to age three with developmental delays and their families.  If a parent thinks their baby or child may have a delay in growth or development or has been diagnosed with a disability or condition that could result in a delay, they can apply for services through SoonerStart.  Eligibility is not based on income, but on the child's developmental status.  There are SoonerStart offices in all areas of the state.  Parents and professionals can contact The Oklahoma Areawide Services Information System (OASIS) at 1-800-426-2747 to learn more about the program and to be referred to the Sooner Start program for their area.

What costs are involved?

There is no direct cost to families for these services, regardless of their income.  This program is mandated by federal and state law and is funded through various state and federal sources.

Where are services provided?

SoonerStart services are provided in the child's and family's natural environment.  This may include the child's home, daycare, or a relative's home.

Who is eligible?

Infants and toddlers through 36 months of age who have developmental delays or have a physical or mental condition (such as down syndrome, cerebral palsy, etc.) which will most likely cause a developmental delay.

Who sponsors this program?

SoonerStart is a joint effort of the Oklahoma Departments of Education, Health, Human Services, Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, The Commission on Children and Youth, and the Oklahoma Health Care Authority.
